Serving the
Children
of the World
TM

A child’s potential is limitless, but it needs to be nurtured. Since 1915, Kiwanis International has provided the framework to bring volunteers and children together, with thousands of hours given each year working one-on-one with children all over the world. Teaching them to read. Involving them in service projects. Showing them how to build stronger communities. Grassroots involvement on every continent. Because every child has the potential to shine.

The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the succeeding decades, they have remained unchanged.
  1. To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
  2. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  3. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
  4. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
  5. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.

To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Guided by six permanent Objects, Kiwanis clubs view their role within their respective communities with a great deal of foresight. Key aspects to operating an effective club include:

  • Evaluating both children’s issues and community needs on an ongoing basis
  • Conducting service projects to respond to those identified needs
  • Maintaining an active membership roster of professional business people who have both the desire and the ability to serve their community.

Become a Member

Joining Kiwanis is very simple. Come to our meetings on Mondays at the Joliet Junior College Renaissance Center and see what our organization is about. Take time to interact with our members and see if you feel comfortable coming to lunch on a weekly basis.

Once you make it known to our president Betty Lorch (blorch@jjc.edu) or our membership coordinator Ralph Sherman (RSher1312@aol.com) that you want to join the Joliet Kiwanis, you will be assigned a “sponsor.” Your sponsor is an active member of Kiwanis who will guide you and serve as a personal mentor to you through the membership process. In coordination with your sponsor, you will be scheduled for a new member “education” session. During the education session, you will learn about Kiwanis International and the goals and expectations of every individual member. After you receive the new member education, you will be officially inducted into our club.

Kiwanis charges members yearly dues $125.00. This is the most expensive out of pocket cost and is entirely tax-deductible.
